Successfully completed end-to-end DNA data storage process in honor of Rosalind Franklin

We are pleased to announce encouraging news from our Datana team this September. Behind the doors of our newly equipped biotech laboratory and with advancements in engineering, we have successfully conducted yet another test of our end-to-end DNA data storage process error-free. This achievement not only proves the robustness and scalability of our technology but is also particularly significant due to the historical importance of the data encoded: we used Rosalind Franklin’s seminal 1953 paper on DNA structure, honoring her important contribution to the field of molecular biology.

As part of our ongoing efforts, we rigorously tested the latest advancements in our DNA data storage. By enhancing both writing and reading methods, we achieved a more streamlined and reliable end-to-end solution. Our upgraded pipeline now features the following:

  • Automated Data Encoding: Leveraging our proprietary algorithms, we convert binary data (zeros and ones) into a sequence of nucleotides, which forms the blueprint for encoding digital information into synthetic DNA. This process is fully automated by our software solution that has been developed in-house.
  • Enhanced DNA Synthesis: With an improved synthesis reaction method, we’ve significantly boosted scalability and reliability. The new process ensures a higher yield of DNA, increasing its potential as a practical storage medium for large-scale data storage applications.
  • Long-Term Stability: Before storage, the synthesized DNA undergoes a rigorous purification process to ensure stability over extended periods, providing a robust foundation for data preservation.
  • Reliable Data Retrieval: We’ve perfected the data retrieval procedure, from sample preparation to sequencing, resulting in a highly reliable and robust method. Our innovative sequencing technology improvements, combined with advanced data analysis and decoding algorithms developed in the last upgrade, resulted in an error-tolerant system for reading data from DNA.

The results were remarkable. The decoded data from Rosalind Franklin’s paper matched the original encoded data accurately, demonstrating the precision and reliability of our end-to-end DNA data storage process. This accomplishment reaffirms that digital information can be precisely and effectively translated and written into DNA sequences, underscoring DNA’s potential as a secure and sustainable medium for data storage.

By choosing Rosalind Franklin’s work as the data source, we aimed to honor her invaluable contributions to the discovery of DNA’s structure. Embedding her original paper into DNA not only showcases the practicality of our storage solution but also pays tribute to a pioneer whose research was instrumental in understanding the double helix.

This is just one of many milestones that reflect the dedication and innovation of our team during this critical phase of research and development. Every time we successfully complete the end-to-end process, we validate our commitment to advancing DNA as a viable medium for data storage and bring us one step closer to transforming how the world stores information. We are proud of this achievement and excited about its implications for the future of data storage.
